SANITARIUM - Patricia Rasey

Legend has it that a vampire who does not feed on human blood for the period between blue moons -- they occur about once every three and a half years -- and finds true love will be returned to his mortal form. A vampire, Jake checked himself into a sanitarium three years ago to close himself away from the temptations of human flesh. The only problem is: How does one find true love in isolation? The closest Jake has come is Nurse Annabelle Duncan. Then patients on the ward start dying, and Annie is framed for the murders. Can Jake discover the killer before Annie is lost to him forever?

Heartwarming, poignant, suspenseful, thrilling are the words to describe this wonderful anthology. Five fantastic tales of love that come along only ONCE IN A BLUE MOON.

Jake is tired of being a vampire. Living in isolation for three years, waiting for the night of the Blue Moon, Jake is determined to be mortal again. For this to happen, Jake has forsaken his thirst for human blood and he must find true love. If he accomplishes both feats, Jake could become mortal again, though it has never been proven for vampires to become mortal again. Annie is a nurse at the Sanitarium who Jake has longed for and hopes that she is the true love he seeks. But forces are working against him and time is running out…

Jake and his creator, Kenji, who we meet in this tale, are unforgettable. The spin on this vampire tale that Ms. Rasey creates, draws a reader in and hooks them immediately. The anticipation to see if Jake succeeds in his quest for mortality keeps one on the edge of their seat. Sanitarium is a strong tale of intrigue, suspense and unforgettable characters, as well as an ending that leaves the reader applauding. Another hit for Patricia A. Rasey.

All the stories in Once In a Blue Moon revolve around love, life choices and the Blue Moon. Each story represents what is difficult about love and the feelings it brings out in all of us. Each author shows their wonderful talents with a pen in their all too brief stories, but they are all memorable and sweep the reader away. I don’t think I could pick just one favourite story in this anthology; this is an amazing collection of paranormal stories from some of today’s leading talent in many genres.

Be aware of the Blue Moon…you never know what will happen when the moon is full!!

5 STARS!

This novella is, partially, set in a "Sanitarium". Annabelle "Annie" Duncan works third shift. She knows that Jake committed himself three years ago. He believes he is a vampire. Of course, no one believes Jake's claims. Jake did not reside in a normal room. He dwells in the basement. Each patient is odd in different ways.

There has been three deaths recently. Since they were elderly no one really worried. They simply stopped breathing, natural death. Or so someone wanted it to seem. But when a young, strong, healthy man dies or respiratory failure Detective Kendall is brought in to investigate. The detective finds a vial of Pavulon. It is a drug used by anesthesiologists and too much of it will cause breathing to cease. There is no anesthesiologist on staff so the drug should not be anywhere in the building. The conclusion is murder. The only link between all four deaths is that Annie was on duty.

Jake is tired of being a vampire. Now he is chasing the Legend of the Blue Moon. The prize is mortality. The legend has two parts. First, he is not to have human blood for three years. So Jake had checked into the sanitarium and fed on the rodents in the basement. The end of the three years is drawing near. The only thing left is to complete the second part of the legend. He must find true love. Jake's sights are on Annie for this. When Jake realizes Annie is being set up for murder, he begins listening to everyone closely. He had to keep Annie out of prison and close to him. The blue moon would be upon him soon.

But the Elder Vampires did not want Jake to attempt the legend. If he succeeded, other vampires would try. Kenji Oshiro is a ninja and the one who created Jake. Therefore, Kenji is sent to stop Jake at all costs. Jake is not to be killed, but must fail to meet both requirements. Kenji will make sure of it!
